While there is a great demand for conventional cars in the market that still run on gasoline and diesel engines there is a growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles that are considered the next level of technology in the automobile market.
Electric Cars Vs Hybrid Cars
With the turn of the century, many car makers around the world decided to experiment with new technologies that can allow consumers to cut down their gas expenses. Electric cars and hybrid cars offer new technologies that allow consumers to curb the amount of money they spend on car fuel. Many car owners believe that electric cars and hybrid cars are similar but the fact is that there is a huge difference between both car technologies.
While most people believe that electric cars are relatively new but the fact is that electric cars were invented almost 180 years ago. In 1828, Anyos Jedlik, a Hungarian inventor designed the first electric motor that was connected to a car model. However, rechargeable batteries were the biggest hurdle for many car inventors that wanted to use electricity to run their vehicles. In 1867 World Exposition Austrian inventor Franz Kravogl displayed an electric powered two wheel cycle while the first four wheel electric car was built by a German engineer Andreas Flocken in 1888 but technological limitations never allowed the rise of electric cars until Toyota and Honda decided to revive it in 1990s. Soon, many car manufacturers focused on hybrid technologies that would allow cars to run on electric batteries as well as on conventional engines that are used in the vehicle.
Major Differences between Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Vehicles
- Electric vehicles run on electric power that comes directly from the batteries that are stored below the vehicle. These vehicles are propelled entirely on electric power and therefore they operate in all electric mode. The electric motor is connected to the battery which is rechargeable and therefore electric cars do not need any fuel at all. On the other hand, hybrid cars are combination of two technologies and usually hybrid cars are conventional gasoline cars mated with electric motor that allows the driver to switch between gasoline and electric mode. In some cars, the gasoline engine of the vehicle takes over the electric motor when the car is accelerated beyond certain speed limit.
- In terms of the distance, hybrid vehicles definitely take the lead because hybrid cars have the combination of conventional gasoline engines plus electric motor that offers longer distance with better fuel economy. This is not the case with electric cars that run entirely on electric power from rechargeable batteries and therefore electric cars do offer better fuel economy but the amount of distance it can travel is lower than that of hybrid vehicles.
- Electric car have batteries but car owners have to connect the car to some source of energy that can allow the batteries to get charged. There are many electric cars that can make use of home electric energy when the car is parked in the garage. However, hybrid vehicles have different rechargeable batteries that not only power the vehicle when on electric mode but also store some power. Hence, hybrid cars are still much popular than electric cars that have to be charged when the batteries are used up.
- Since electric cars derive their power and performance from batteries the top speed and performance of the car is very limited. On the other hand, hybrid cars have conventional engines that can offer speed and performance when the driver wants to accelerate. This allows the driver to decide how and when they want to speed up or drive on eco mode. Some hybrid cars have automatic options that switch from electric motor to gasoline engine while some cars have manual functions for it.
- Electric cars are usually preferred for city driving because it allows users to save the amount of money they spend on their fuel expenses. However, these cars are not recommended for long distance drives across the country because of lack of gas stations that offer electric charging options. Hybrid cars have the ability to cover long distances because drivers can run on electric mode while they are in the city but they can switch to conventional gasoline engines when they are on the highway.
