Tesla has declared that all of its future cars will be equipped with full self-driving tech that includes eight surround cameras rendering a 360 degree view around the vehicle at up to 250 meters of range, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and forward-facing radar to counter heavy rain, fog and dust. All this equipment would cost around $8,000.
The software engineers at Tesla are working hard to complete the software by the end of next year. Once done, Tesla drives could be fully autonomous.
The existing cars can’t be upgraded to the new hardware. On the other hand, the new Tesla’s might not have standard safety features such as automatic emergency breaking, collision warning, lane holding and active cruise control.
It is important to note that Musk considers it twice as safest cars as a human driver, so we cannot call it fully safe. Let’s wait and see how this project shapes up in the coming years.
